PreneraZena: Conference on Women’s Rights

At the PreneraZena conference on May 30, 2023, held at Enjio Hab in Belgrade, the Report on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality for 2021 and 2022 was formally presented. The report provided an in-depth analysis of the status of women in Serbia during these years, highlighting notable legislative advancements as well as key indicators in various areas. These include equality and non-discrimination, women’s participation in public and political life, security, education, employment and economic empowerment, health and healthcare, access to justice, and family and property relations.

Despite progress in legislation, the implementation of laws remains significantly inadequate. Even key state institutions fail to implement and respect the laws they propose.

The discussion, moderated by journalist Tamara Srijemac, focused on violence against women and girls in Serbia. Panelists included Dr. Kosana Becker, Program Director at FemPlatz, and Biljana Stepanov, Director of the Women’s Support Center. They highlighted the prevalence of gender stereotypes and prejudices in media narratives and court rulings. The importance of women speaking out about violence to empower others to report was emphasized. Biljana Stepanov also pointed out that security policies in Serbia lack a gender perspective and require improved risk assessment.

The conference highlighted the unwavering dedication of women’s organizations in their fight for equality, with optimism for the future. While challenges remain, participants emphasized that progress is possible through persistence and collaboration, noting that even sectors not directly related to gender equality can play a role in advancing women’s rights.
