Summary of the project implemented by Defendologija center Nikšić
Centre for Security, Sociological and Criminological Research of Montenegro ‘’Defendologija’’ will implement the project ‘’Let’s Contribute to Better Recognition of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management’’ during a period of 6 months in Nikšić, Montenegro.
The main goal of the project is Contributing to better disaster risk management and response in Nikšić municipality. With the implementation of three groups of project activities an important strategic document will be completed and the knowledge level on the importance of strategic documents regarding protection and rescue and fire risk prevention with relevant target groups will be increased.

The specific goals of the project
- Strengthened capacities of the municipality of Nikšić by improving the system for managing and responding to fire risks;
- Increased awareness of citizens, NGOs and key institutions about the importance of creating strategic documents and plans in the field of protection and rescue in the municipality of Nikšić;
- Improved awareness and knowledge of the citizens of Nikšić regarding the importance of strategic documents and fire risk management.
Beneficiaries
This project will benefit various target groups. OCDs in Nikšić municipality and in Montenegro will be encouraged to be more proactive in the fields of protection and rescue and disaster risk management, and prevention using good practices of the project. Local governments and relevant institutions will, through the completion of strategic documents, gain a better picture of needs and areas for action, and use practices of this project to further develop relevant strategies in other municipalities. Citizens and volunteers will be better informed in the topic of fire risk prevention, and for tourists Nikšić will be shown as a responsible city aiming towards ecological EU standards and green tourism while protecting people and environment.
Main activities
- Creating a local disaster risk assessment for the municipality of Nikšić
– Hiring experts and sending letters to inform relevant actors about project activities;
– 3 focus groups (representatives of institutions, protection and rescue services and citizens) for the preparation of a SWOT analysis in order to define strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the field of risk management and to strengthen the interest and participation of citizens and relevant actors;
– Formation (12 members, representatives of the Municipality, relevant institutions and services, NGOs and businessmen) of a working group and holding 5 meetings;
– Preparation of the Local Disaster Risk Assessment for the Municipality of Nikšić based on the adopted Instructions for the preparation of the Risk Assessment used during the preparation of the document “Disaster Risk Assessment for Montenegro”.
- Improving information for disaster risk management through promotion of the importance of creating relevant strategies and plans and celebrating the International Disaster Risk Reduction Day on October 13th
– Preparation and organization of events, creation of promotional material (flyers);
– Organization of a conference where the results of the project will be presented and where representatives of the organization and relevant institutions will talk about the importance of creating local strategies for emergency management. At the same time, the Disaster Risk Assessment for the municipality of Nikšić will be presented, and the local self-government will be lobbied for the adoption of the document. The activities will be carried out in cooperation with the Protection and Rescue Service of the Nikšić Municipality and the Nikšić Tourist Organization;
– Panel discussion on the topic of “Disaster Risk Management” with 4 experts from the profession
- Public campaign: “Let’s fight fires together”
– Hiring a production company for video production, identification of participants in the video, creation of a scenario, recording and production of the video (individual and group recording, in accordance with the scenario, in the presence of representatives of the organization). The duration of the video is 30 seconds, it contains: fire prevention messages and prevention mechanisms;
– Production of promotional material (educational flyers with information on fire prevention);
– Video promotion on social networks (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube). Lease of a large video billboard in the city center for a period of 3 months, on which the billboard will be broadcast 90 times a day, 8100 times a month, a total of 24300 times in a period of 3 months (summer months during the summer fire season);
– In cooperation with the Tibor Independent Scout Company and the Nikšić Tourist Organization, as part of the campaign, an info desk will be organized on the town square and promotional material will be distributed to 200 citizens of Nikšić.
