Description

The strategic orientation of Kareja is: researching corruption in general and especially its most serious form – political corruption, improving the fight against political corruption and other serious forms of corruption, educating citizens about the social danger of political corruption, and especially young people about the importance of opposing corruption and preserving basic moral values as basic human values.

  • 1.11.2024. one of the biggest tragedies in peacetime Serbia happened. In Novi Sad, the canopy of the railway station building fell and killed 15 people. The government was obviously aware of its responsibility, so it tried to avoid it, in the worst possible way. While most of the victims have not been excavated, the authorities emphasized in the news that it was an unreconstructed canopy. Which is not true, because the entire building was renovated on July 5, 2024. ceremoniously opened and put into operation.
  • The public reacted: first by lighting candles; then blocking the roads at 11:52 (when the canopy fell) for 15 minutes (one minute for each of the 15 victims). The protests are joined by students, who organize “15 minutes of silence” in Belgrade, with 100,000 participants. The protests are spreading to more than 130 cities.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM:

According to the participants of the protest, there was violence, starting from verbal to physical, and violence in the form of being run over by a car. A car ran into a crowd of protesting citizens, injuring four members of the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra. The protests gained intensity after a female student was seriously injured by a car during a protest in Belgrade. On 24.1.2025. year, another female student was injured in the same way.

All violence is further encouraged by the statements of the highest state officials who justify the applied violence and encourage it to continue. This is also contributed by the media with national frequency, which are completely put into the function of violence.

  • On the other hand, there is a lack of reaction from institutions in accordance with the law, and those authorized by law are applied selectively. The question arises, will the law enforcement agencies be able to control the situation, if it escalates?

By implementing the project activities, we expect the following results:

  • A positive impact on the radicalization of events, the reduction of violence and the investigation of corrupt causes of protests has been achieved.
  • The understanding of the impact of CSO activities on crisis situations in society has been improved.
