From Playground to Green Haven: A Schoolyard Project Unites Community and Inspires Young Eco-Guardians

In a marginalized Belgrade suburb, a grassroots project is transforming a schoolyard into a thriving biodiversity hub, blending community pride with a larger mission: building intercultural dialogue and trust.

After seven years of working in the area, the project team helped bring together children, parents, and neighbors to plant trees, nurture plants, and reclaim the schoolyard. The result? A growing sense of environment and responsibility for the space.

This renewed energy has inspired parents to choose the local school for their children and to join in regular schoolyard maintenance. Memories of an old orchard and flower beds have fueled a commitment to bring these features back, with families and the school now discussing plans for long-term improvements, including eco-friendly designs that support the local environment.

Over the summer, children created habitats for insects and birds as part of a biodiversity program, which sparked their interest in nature. Now, they care for plants and animals, learning to value and protect their surroundings.

To share this journey, the team created a video that introduces biodiversity in a fun, kid-friendly way. It shows how small actions can bring big, positive change, capturing the power of community care and connection.
