The “From Margin to Center” project has reached a significant milestone in its mission to enhance citizen participation in local decision-making across Serbia. This initiative arose from the critical need to address the underrepresentation of citizens, particularly young people, in shaping their communities. By focusing on empowering informal groups and grassroots initiatives, the project has successfully mobilized local support and amplified previously marginalized voices.
The primary stakeholders and beneficiaries of the project included citizens, especially young people involved in informal groups and grassroots initiatives. The project team and mentors were also crucial stakeholders, providing essential support to these groups.
Implemented in partnership with local informal groups and grassroots initiatives across Serbia, and with substantial support from the Norwegian Embassy—particularly in community mobilization and public advocacy—the project has made a lasting impact.
Looking ahead, the results of the “From Margin to Center” project will continue to drive positive change. The skills and strategies developed, from public advocacy training to communication strategies, lay a solid foundation for the long-term sustainability of these grassroots efforts. The city coalitions and networks formed will support ongoing collective action and influence on local policymaking. Furthermore, the project’s success will serve as a valuable educational resource, empowering future generations of activists with the knowledge and experiences gained.
In reflecting on the project, team members share their insights: “Working with informal groups was challenging but incredibly rewarding. Their passion for making changes in their community is remarkable,” says the Manager of the Local Initiatives Program. “The greatest success was seeing young people from small communities take the initiative and become leaders in their environments,” adds the Program Coordinator for Local Initiatives.
The “From Margin to Center” project’s achievements stand as a testament to the power of grassroots activism and the importance of including all voices in local decision-making.
