Changing Lives Through Protection and Empowerment

In 2024, through our core grant, the Vatra Center continued its vital mission to protect and empower women and girls affected by trafficking, sexual abuse, and gender-based violence. During the year, 148 victims and potential victims of trafficking and 71 of their children received support, including 76 new cases and 32 children who turned to Vatra for help for the first time.

Much of this work started in the field. Vatra’s Mobile Units—active in Dibër, Durrës, Berat, and Vlorë, and newly expanded to Fier and Gjirokastër—identified 47 new potential victims and referred them for protection. These teams remained the main source of case identification, reaching women and girls who otherwise might have gone unnoticed.

Each survivor received a personalized plan of care within two weeks, addressing needs such as safe housing, medical and psychological support, legal aid, education, and job opportunities. Close cooperation with municipal services ensured that support was consistent and comprehensive.

Safety and recovery came in many forms. Sixty women and girls, along with nine children, found refuge in Vatra’s secure shelter, including foreign victims from countries like Ukraine, Romania, Moldova, Brazil, and China. Others—60 beneficiaries and 58 children—were supported with rented apartments and financial aid while receiving ongoing psychosocial, medical, and educational support.

Medical and mental health care remained central. Eighty-one survivors received health services and medication, while 101 benefited from psychological counseling and therapy sessions that helped them heal, regain stability, and prepare for reintegration. Psychologists stood beside survivors throughout their journey, even during police interviews, ensuring emotional safety and strength.

Through this program, Vatra offered more than assistance—it provided safety, dignity, and the chance for a new beginning. Every woman and child supported is a story of resilience and hope, proving that with compassion and commitment, healing and empowerment are within reach.
