Presentation of the National Rulebook for Bicycle Infrastructure for Urban Cycling in North Macedonia

Go Green – Биди Зелен, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, organized a high-profile event to present the National Rulebook for Planning, Designing, Building, and Maintaining Bicycle Infrastructure. The event, held in Skopje, brought together representatives from public institutions, civil society, and the urban cycling community to discuss the rulebook and explore avenues for future cooperation in developing safe and sustainable cycling infrastructure across North Macedonia.

The National Rulebook, developed over the past year by experts from the Ministry of Transport and Go Green, provides comprehensive guidelines for municipalities and urban planners to ensure that bicycle infrastructure is safe, consistent, and aligned with European and international standards. The rulebook aims to support the integration of cycling into urban transport systems and encourage greater participation in cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transport.

The event began with a group cycling activity from different starting points to the newly built bike path in front of Hotel Continental, followed by a short program of cycling demonstrations. Participants then provided statements for the media, highlighting the importance of the rulebook and the broader efforts to promote urban cycling in the country. A joint ride along the bike path to Gazi Baba Municipality allowed participants to experience firsthand the practical applications of the guidelines included in the rulebook.

The formal presentation of the Rulebook for Bicycle Infrastructure provided an opportunity to showcase its key elements, including standards for planning, design, construction, and maintenance of cycling infrastructure. During the presentation, participants discussed the importance of safe and accessible cycling routes, the integration of bicycle lanes into urban planning, and the need for long-term maintenance to ensure sustainable urban mobility. They emphasized that successful implementation of the rulebook would require ongoing cooperation, coordination, and support from both local authorities and national institutions.

The presentation of the rulebook represents an important step towards creating safer, more sustainable, and inclusive cities in North Macedonia. By providing clear and practical guidelines for bicycle infrastructure, the initiative supports the development of cycling-friendly urban environments, encourages citizen participation, and strengthens collaboration between civil society and public institutions.
