Institute for Urban Politics

Summary of organization’s strategic orientation

The Ministry of Space collective was founded in 2011 with the aim to contribute to the fight for just and democratic development of the cities. In the first years, we initiated and participated in the activation of several abandoned spaces for the needs of the community – Inex Film, Street Gallery, Cinema Zvezda, Magacin, etc. Through these experiences, we have developed models of democratic management of shared and common spaces, but also mechanism to institutionalize this type of activation in a participatory and transparent manner. In addition, we developed other programs that expanded the work of the organization in several additional directions – participatory urban planning, right to housing and just energy transition.

Beneficiaries

Apart from the very long experience among the organizations in Serbia that are involved in such a comprehensive way in urban development of cities, the Ministry of Space is distinguished by its unique position between, on the one hand, the interested professional public and civil society organizations, and on the other, citizens and local communities. Namely, this approach not only completes our understanding of the real situation, (opposite) interests and obstacles in the areas of spatial development of the city, but also strengthens the potential to contribute to systemic changes through networking and wider mobilization.
